PLDT blocks over 1 billion attempts to access child sexual abuse materials

Telco giant PLDT through its child protection platform has blocked more than one billion attempts to access prohibited online child sexual abuse materials (CSAMS) by Filipino internet users in a span of six months.

PLDT utilized an automated artificial intelligence platform which was fully deployed in November 2021.

“Last May, our last count of the number of URLs (uniform resource locators) or content that we are blocking that we have in our database is already close to 300,000,” said PLDT Group and Smart Communications Inc. first vice president and group chief information security officer Angel Redoble.

“Since November, when we deployed the solution, we have blocked more than one billion access attempts,” he furthered.

The official said the PLDT Group works round the clock to strengthen efforts in blocking access to materials related to CSAM and online sexual abuse and exploitation of children.

“We don’t sleep, we don’t have weekends, we don’t have holidays, because our enemies are also getting better and they’re also always on attack mode,” he said.

The PLDT Group, meanwhile, has also prevented 23 million smishing messages from reaching their customers from June 11 to June 14 alone.

“We are constantly upgrading our tools to stay ahead of criminals,” Redoble said.
