Around 78,000 SIM cards linked to scams blocked by PLDT, Smart

As part of its commitment to protect its customers and to help the government combat the rise in text-related scams, telco giant PLDT and its wireless mobile arm, Smart, have blocked almost 78,000 SIM cards.

The firms said that these SIM cards are used to send text messages with an intention to trick the victim to give their personal information like passwords or credit card details.

It added that the said number was double than what they had tackled in 2021.

“We at PLDT and Smart have proactively blocked mobile numbers that have been involved in smishing activities. Once detected by our team, even in the absence of a complaint from our customers, we shut that mobile number out of our network,” said PLDT and Smart FVP and chief information security officer Angel Redoble.

“We continue to engage our customers, sharing with them useful tips on identifying malicious messages and protecting their personal data. We also work with relevant government offices, as well as law enforcement agencies, to effectively combat fraud and cybercrime,” she added.

In 2021, PLDT and Smart invested around P3 million to enhance their cybersecurity infrastructure.
