The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) said SpaceX, owned by US tech billionaire Elon Musk, is targeting to commence its operations in the country before the end of June.
“They intend to start operations, at least the first of the 3 gateways, before the end of June 30, before the end of the term of President Duterte. They will start the use of their low earth orbit satellites and then the gateways are essential to capture the signals from the LEOs and pass it on to consumers or link it up to telcos in the country,” DTI secretary Ramon Lopez said.
He added that SpaceX is now securing permits from the National Telecommunications Commission.
With the entry of SpaceX in the Philippines, the country becomes the first in Southeast Asia to avail of the said technology that will bring high-speed satellite broadband connectivity even in far-flung areas.
