Telcos vow cooperation with gov’t to address text scams

Telco giants Globe Telecom and PLDT Inc. expressed their commitment to work with the government and other private sectors against the growing incidents of text scams that offer Filipinos high-paying jobs.

Smart Communications, the mobile wireless arm of PLDT, said that it’s ready to take “swift action” in protecting its subscribers.

“We realize the urgency of the need to protect the public from these scammers,” said Smart regulatory head Roy Ibay.

“Having said that, we also believe that we need to balance,” he added, noting that PLDT and Smart would “not want to inadvertently harm legitimate users of our services in pursuit of a handful of unscrupulous individuals.”

Meanwhile, Globe chief information security officer Anton Bonifacio called for better “threat intelligence sharing” among private sector stakeholders.

“We need to improve private sector partnerships on top of what has already been a robust public sector enablement through the National Privacy Commission (NPC),” he said.

Meanwhile, Senator Grace Poe also urged the government to work with the private sector to protect the mobile phone-dependent public against text-based phishing scams.

She recommended the use of hotlines where people could report spam and scams, and get immediate help.

On November 19, the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) ordered all telco providers to conduct a text blast to subscribers to warn them against text spam.

“BABALA! Huwag maniwala sa text na diumanoy nag-aalok ng trabaho. Huwag po magbigay ng personal na impormasyon. Ito po ay isang scam,” the text blast read.
